iSchools team present project in CHED's search

Mr. Jaymer Jayoma and Engr. Jeffrey Dellosa delivered the iSchools Project to the panel of Caraga Region's Search for Best Extension Program today at the CHED's Regional Office in Butuan City.

Mr. Jayoma discussed the primary aim and objectives as well as the activities of the program implemented to the seven recipient schools in 2006-2008.

The search for the Best Extension Program in the Region is spearheaded by the CHED Caraga Office. The search encouraged all higher academic institutions in Caraga to submit at least two extension programs that fit to the requirements outlined in the search for the best extension program.

NORMISIST submitted to CHED pertinent reports, MOA and other supporting information that would support the project's implementation.

The other participants who presented their own extension programs were FSUU from Butuan City and SSPSC of Surigao. Winner of the search will recieve Php300,000 for the project and will be recommended to compete for the nationwide search.

Blog: My thoughts on the iSchools Project tonight

I am not sure how many have noticed the inactivity of the many iSchools blogsites in the past few months. [I am not writing a news or feature story tonight but on my thoughts on the blogsite and on the project as well. So this will be simply a blog.]

Back in the days when we were implementing the project for the 2007-2008 recipients, there were just too many news and feature stories to write that actually I haven't done them all to satisfy my hunger for writing and publish them in this blogsite.

Worst of all, the inactivity happened right after the advanced online writing training - workshop in Kalibo, Aklan! Hmmm, for sure Ms. Chua and Ms. Rimban who were our trainers will be VERY disappointed to us if they happen to know about it...

Part of the reason that I failed to update the site is my full-time commitment to my students, being an instructor and at the same time as a BSECE adviser. This is apart from the many extra-curricular activities that I have and yet to do from being an officer of the IECEP Caraga, from coaching ICT and ECE quiz teams to the Engineering website administrator to name a few...

As much as I want to create more stories, I cannot just get out of the campus and visit the school sites because of the full load plus some units overload and those that i have mentioned above. (:

And the other reason among the reasons I mentioned above is the lack of proper equipments to do the documentation - the news and feature reports needed for the project. Until now, probably most of us iSchool project writers have not yet acquired the equipments we need to cover news and feature stories.

I hope our readers (if there are followers to this site) can somehow give some considerations with regards to the updating of this blogsite.

But here are some good stories to tell in summary from July to present, and activities about to happen in the next few months:
  1. Internet connection is almost a "done" deal. Meaning all schools in Caraga will enjoy the promised internet connection before the year is over. The team is working on the bidding of the companie who will provide internet connections to all schools.
  2. There is a new list of schools who will be recipients for the 2008-2009 project implementation. The list is yet to be released to the recipient schools but they have to wait for the final confirmation in some few weeks time.
  3. There were about 31 instructors or faculty who passed the Internation Computers Driver License (ICDL) Examination from the different CICT partners across the country. The result was released Sept. 29.
  4. The Advance Online Writing Training, for those who failed to attend last May and for the new CICT partners, will be held this month in the Island Paradise BOHOL! (Sayang, di na kami makakasama).
  5. Community Mobilization for the new recipients is expected before the year is over, probably on November - December.
These are just the few things highlighted to me as our team's writer and hopefully I can add more in the next few weeks as the 1st semester ends. But here are some goals I would like to make when the 1st semester is over:
  • Hit the road and visit the 7 school sites to do a documentary with my small CANON camera and hopefully gather some few good stories how the computer laboratories are currently working; and most of all, how the computers have transformed the students lives in the last six months!
Perhaps, someone somehow could think of a good motivation to keep the site updated regularly...What about the best iSchools blogsite?

But for now, for tonight, I have to switch to my powerpoint presentation notes for my lectures tomorrow 7AM (Tsk! tsk! You've heard me right, we still have classes while other schools are on vacation already).

Good night!

Day 3: Working deep with Audacity and Soundslides

Three days down, two days more to go.

I am not counting the days left before Saturday or the weekend comes. While it would still hold true, we're more concern about the tedious activities we have to go through for the Advanced Online Writing Training-workshop here in Aklan State University in Banga, Kalibo, Aklan.

Today was no ordinary day as 14 official participants from the different state universities and colleges tried to complete the workshop requirement for the day - producing slide show using audacity and soundslides plus.

We were required to:
  • provide captions for the selected photos from the iSchools activities we have in our area
  • come up with an appropriate narrative audio fitting for the photos selected using audacity, and finally,
  • come up with a slideshow with both photos and the narrative audio mixed together using soundslides plus.
Sounds easy? Not to us rookies on the audacity and soundslides plus tools.

With just 2 hours to gather the captions of the photos, the appropriate storyline, and the final slide show, it made most of us going nuts. I could hear Ley of Cavite State University airing her concern about her hypertension problem in doing all these exercises.

While most of us complain about the very short time to prepare, I felt a sigh of relief, I have been able to meet the deadline today. Just enough before the final "buzzer" went out from Ms. Yvonne Chua, one of our trainers for the training. There were only five of us who beat the clock.

What was best after the most exhausting day so far was a visit to the Sampaguita Gardens outside the Aklan State University campus. It was a relief for all in a day's work.

Teachers and students develops Joomla webpages

Who says only IT professionals can make webpages?

Seven pairs of english-major teachers and students proved that anyone – even non-IT -people can make webpages too. They represented their schools to a web development training conducted by NORMISIST to its seven recipient high schools in Butuan City last week.

The web development training exposed the participants to the basics of Joomla which is an open-source software use to develop webpages.

All participants developed structured lay-outs of the website which they look forward to putting online this year.

One student said during the closing ceremony that she never thought she can create webpages of her own using Joomla. Her teacher continued by saying that this will not be the end of exploring Joomla, but just the beginning of it all.

NORMISIST completes PC Deployment

The NORMISIST team completed the PC Deployment to all recipient public schools in Caraga last March 1.

The deployment team was divided into two groups as:
TEAM 1: Mr. Jaymer Jayoma and Engr. Jerry Halibas and two ASI representatives
TEAM 2: Engr. Alexander Demetillo and Engr. Jeffrey T. Dellosa and one ASI representative

The following schedule was followed:
Day 1, February 26:
• Agusan Del Sur National High School (ASNHS) in San Francisco, Agusan del Sur
• Lawigan National High School in Bgy. Lawigan, Bislig City, Surigao del Sur
Day 2, February 27:
• Sta. Irene National High School in Bgy, Sta. Irene, Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur
• Portlamon Pastor Uy National High School in Bgy. Portlamon, Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur
Day 3, February 28:
• Tubay National High School in Tubay, Agusan del Norte
• NORMISIST
Day 4, February 29:
• Rizal National High School in Bgy. Rizal, Surigao City
Day 5, March 1:
• Bilay National High School in Bgy. Bilay, Surigao City

The deployment proceeded as scheduled with lapses noted on most part of the delivery units – AIR21 (Butuan and Surigao Cities). Technical concerns were also noted in the deployment as well as the community’s reactions - the students, the teachers and the parents who were there in the deployment were also noted.

Some of the impressions from the deployment are as follows:
The schedule was really not followed since the AIR21 truck was always delayed on each of the first delivery of the day. The deployment was most affected during the first day were the delivery was made in the afternoon already. The succeeding deployment schedules were delayed. The same thing happened in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th day of the deployment despite the reminders made to AIR21.

All recipients expected the air-conditioning units to be delivered as well with the PCs. Tubay National High School we noted had their computer laboratory constructed without any windows causing an extreme temperature inside when noon time comes. There was not enough ventilation inside the lab. The lab became hottest when all PCs were up and running. The team cautioned not to turn on the computers overnight as the risk of damaging the PCs is high. Other schools have better ventilation but still the air-conditioning units are badly needed.

The provincial service partner ASI (Global Solutions, Inc. – Butuan City) has done its job well from the set-up to fixing problems encountered during the deployment. They were in constant communication with the NORMISIST team prior and after to the deployment and attends to the needs of NORMISIST. The meeting held between them prior to the deployment has made the deployment a success sticking to the plans defined. The problem lies solely on the late schedules by the management of AIR21.

Stickers were not available for every school so all the computers verified to be working already has not been stamped with the stickers as planned.

The checklist for the verification of the serial numbers for every component was a tedious thing to do. But the team has managed to complete them anyway. Parents, teachers, and students gathered during the PC deployment and were all ecstatic about the PCs delivered to them. The term ecstatic or overjoyed is an understatement to describe their feelings upon the delivery. Some students and teachers stayed with the team when they spent overnight in the schools to help monitor the PCs during the burn-in tests.

Technical aspect:
1.0 The team noted that PCs wirelessly connected received three bars of signal only and not optimum as desired despite the short distance they were all connected.

Common things noted in the deployment on the PCs:
- CPU fan striking the wire connections inside (which you would hear immediately during booting). Improper assembly of the internal components is the main culprit to this problem.
- Some PCs do not have wireless connection upon booting. Loose connections on the board are noted that would have caused the problem.
- Some CPU’s just turned off after several minutes they were turned ON.
- The team noted that it is not possible to connect DVI and VGA port at the same time when using the LCD multimedia projector with the computer monitor.

RECOMMENDATIONS:
We recommend the following for the next implementation of the PC deployment:
Strict adherence to schedule planned should be followed by all members of the deployment – AIR21, ASI and the SUC.

- Air-conditioning units SHOULD be delivered AHEAD or TOGETHER with the PC deliveries. This will help protect the PCs deployed in schools without proper ventilation.
- With regards to item 3 in the observation above, there should be a compatible driver installed.
- Mouse pads should have been included in the package.
- Wireless / Wifi adaptor card should have better driver compatibility with regards to the Wifi signal strength to optimize wireless connection of all PCs.

February 26, 2008

Two schools were scheduled for deployment on this date - Agusan del Sur National High School (ASNHS) in San Francisco, Agusan del Sur and the Lawigan National High School (LNHS) in Bgy. Lawigan, Bislig City, Surigao del Sur.

PC Deployment in Agusan del Sur National High School (for photos on the deployment, please click on this link: ASNHS photos)

Two members of the iSchools team, Engr. Demetillo and Engr. Dellosa went straight ahead to San Francisco, Agusan del Sur from Butuan City @ 6AM. Air21 together with the ASI (Global Solutions, Inc.) were expected to leave Butuan City at the same time.

Engr. Demetillo and Engr. Dellosa were at the school by 8:00AM but Air21 and ASI were not yet there. Communications were made with Air21 group and the iSchools team was informed that there were problems with the forwarder not following the requirements on the flooring protection. The flooring protection should serve as protection for accumulated rain water on the truck. Caraga is experiencing bad weather conditions, intermittent strong rains at the start of the week and deployment are pursued based on the committed dates.

The team was advised that AIR21 with the ASI will be leaving in Butuan City by 11AM. They arrived in ASNHS at 2pm, with Mr. Jaymer Jayoma accompanied the group on their way to ASNHS.

To speed up unloading, some students from ASNHS with AIR21 took down all units for ASNHS. At 2:30pm, all units were unloaded and checked by representatives from the school, iSchool team and AIR21. The principal, Mr. Teodoro Plaza with the procurement officer of the school signed the documents needed by AIR21 as acceptance to the computers and peripherals or accessories delivered to them.

Following the signing, AIR21 proceeded to another school in LNHS with two representatives from the ASI and another member of the iSchools team.

One representative from ASI (Global Solutions, Inc.) remained for the set-up and installation. By 330pm, after the team had their snack, the set-up began.

To speed up the set-up and installation, two technicians from ASNHS with members of the iSchools team helped out. There were NO missing or lacking items were recorded during set-up and installation. Cables were also complete.

By 630pm, all PC hardwares were connected. The server was configured and the printer was set-up. Test prints were done. PCs were turned on and installed with the desktop backgrounds for ischools. There were some minor problems with the desktop noted and were immediately addressed by the ASI representative.

Wifi was also tested immediately upon set-up. PCs were able to get signals from both the router and from a nearby open Wifi. Internet was tested immediately and found to be ok. We were able to check our mails as well.

By 8pm, the ASI technician continues to set-up connection by each of the PCs to the server to complete the connection of computers. By 10pm, all computers were connected to the server.

NO MAJOR problems were encountered in the PC deployment here in ASNHS.

The computers were all left turned on and will be checked again the following day.

PCs should be "in" in early 2008

[In my own opinion...]

"Happy new year!" I could hear this phrase louder than the firecrackers from my joyful and cheerful parents, aunts and cousins I spent with on the New Year's eve over a midnight meal here in Butuan City.

Welcoming the new year has always been great with our own families around, and when we recall all the blessings we received from last year. We would hope that the coming year will give us enough blessings just like last year.

Most of us start our year hoping the new year would be better, or equally good like last year. This is nothing different the way it has been from the previous years, but an exception to the 'few' - the students, teachers, and the community of the 320 public high schools nationwide who are recipients to the iSchools project that eagerly awaits to make a huge difference in their lives this new year.

The government, through the efforts of the Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT) under the Office of the President, and the State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) who lead the implementation in the different regions in the country will provide 21 computer sets, lcd projector, 2 sets of air-conditioning units and one-year free internet connection to the selected public high schools (PHS).

They are about to witness the information technology (IT) evolution as it unfolds before their very own eyes. 'Evolution', as what I prefer to call it as most of these public high schools transforms 'their computers' made from carton boxes to the genuine, high speed and advanced computer sets we have today.
The new year for the recipient schools could have been different, and could have been better already and more commemorative if the freebies promised have been awarded already December of last year as planned. And if only project implementations are perfect, these set of hardwares could have been at the doorsteps of these schools last end of October 2007, if we have to revisit the timeplan again.

The reason why PCs have not been delivered yet, I was told, was primarily due to the bidding procedures we had in the government, and those bidders who were involved. "It takes forever to do a healthy and fast bidding process", I heard a colleague in the office. This was really something different and really new to me having worked in a multinational company (in a private sector) and had implemented multimillion dollar and top business projects delivered on time, modesty aside.

It is true projects are sometimes extended for few days but not months! The basic rule we had was that you can only extend your timeline 10% maximum of the initial duration you have put in on your Microsoft project calendar (using the Microsoft project software).

With all the bureaucracy in the government as we have learned and accepted already, it would take more months for the PCs to be delivered keeping the excitement of the recipients to a stand still, if not plumetting thier hopes to nothing, and feeling like an investor looking at his stocks going down when the stock market is crashing.

"Baka maulit na naman yung nangyari sa supposed grant ng DTI", Mrs. Plaza, the school head of Lawigan National High School in Surigao del Sur stressed her frustrations over the delay. "They told us they'll give us computers but nothing happened since then."

This is just one of the school heads complaining and a lot more in other regions. As early as October to November in 2007, these schools were as prepared as the boy scouts, working overtime to put their laboratories complete as per the requirements set by the CICT. And by late November, the implementing SUC teams began to receive questions as to the delivery of the PCs.

While it was difficult to explain the delays to the PHS, we could only make a guarantee that this project will deliver its promise. We hope.

The ill-effects of the bidding process had kept us all hoping that the PCs can be delivered soon to the hopefulls. The poor undertakings and the setbacks we have in the process leading to the delays of the necessary services supposed to be delivered on time by the government should somehow be prevented in future projects, if not improved in the process. We cannot just sit down there and don't do anything to improve failures we have in the past.

We still want to see the recipients wear their wide smiles on their faces like when they first heard about the project during the community mobilization. We hope that the PCs will finally be at their schools soon.
And so we all hope.
